Persuasive Writing

An example of  persuasive writing:

Should All Children Have To Play Sport?

All children should certainly play sport. Everyone knows sport is great for you. Sport rocks!

Most importantly, playing sport keeps children fit and healthy. Growing bodies need lots of exercise and the best way to do this is by playing sport. Scientists have shown the children who play sport are healthier than children who sit and play computer games. Everybody knows that it is important to be fit and healthy!

Obviously, there is a sport for everyone. There are lots of sports children can play like soccer, netball, cricket and softball.  Even people in wheelchairs can play some sports.

Additionally, playing in a team is great for children because they can make lots of new friends. They also learn how to work together in a team and cooperate. Who wouldn’t want to make new friends?

In conclusion, all children should absolutely play sports. So what are you waiting for, go play a sport now!

Number Facts

Year 3 should aim to be able to recognise the following types of sums and work them out mentally in 4 seconds:

+0 +1 +2 +3

-0 -1 -2 -3

doubles (2 +2  –  12 +12)

doubles takeaway ( 8-4    18 -9)

+10

– 10

+9 (compensation  stategy – eg: 9 + 6 = turn the 9 into a 10 add 6 and takeaway 1)

-9 (compensation strategy – eg: 17 – 9 = turn 9 into a 10, turn 17 into 18,

18 – 10 = 8)

doubles plus 1 ( 6 + 7)

Times tables

Times tables

Year 3 students should know the following times tables automatically:

x0     x1      x2(doubles)     x10     x11

They should be working towards knowing the following automatically, or working them out quickly using  the clues:

x5 (count in 5’s)

x9 (use fingers)

x12 (eg: 3 x 12  is worked out by  3 x 10 plus 3 x 2 equals 36)

That leaves only a few tricky ones to learn off by heart.

3×3  3×4   3×6   3×7   3×8

4×6   4×7   4×8

6×7  6×8

7×8

Rote learning is a good way to learn times tables.

Skip counting is also important for learning and understanding times tables. eg: 3 6 9 12 15 18 21 24 27 30 33 36)

Multiplication and division are linked.

If you know your times tables then you can work out division.
